Description
Concerto Grotto
English: Concerto Grotto was composed to be played in a cave at Líðargjógv, a ravine in the cliffs on the coast of Sandoy. The ravine, into which the sea rushes, cuts right through the cave and extends nearly to the back wall. Sunlight creates interesting effects on the cave walls, especially in the late afternoon when the sun shines directly into the cave. Rock doves make their homes in the cave. Appropriately, a nearby cave is called Dúgvuholið »Dove Cave«. According to local tradition, a subterranean passage leads from the cave through to the other side of Sandoy. One can supposedly hear the sound of the sea through a connecting hole higher up in the mountains. Concerto Grotto can, of course, be played under other circumstances. However, the cave has provided inspiration for the composition, and the special light and sounds of the cave, of the rocks and of the sea, are themselves integral parts of the music.
