Description
Voodoo Pop
Voodoo Pop is the sophomore album from Faroe Islands artist Son of Fortune. This next chapter in Son of Fortune’s journey took him from his beautiful remote archipelago in the North Atlantic, all the way to Nashville.
The voyage from the small remote steep-terrain village where he spent his youth, sitting with his guitar, dreaming about going out into the world to perform at music’s Mecca, is a long but natural one….
After writing a ton of letters and receiving about five replies, he took a chance and jumped on the plane with nothing but his faithful old Stratocaster, and a trunk full of tunes and ambitions. Before he knew it, he was standing outside Sputnik Sound studios with a six pack of producer Vance Powell’s brand of choice, knocking on his door.
This was the beginning of what was to become “Voodoo Pop”, which is recorded, produced and mixed by Grammy Award winning team Mike Fahey and Vance Powell (Jack White, Chris Stapleton).
The rawness in the heavy weather and the breathtaking scenery of the Faroe Islands shine through in Son of Fortune’s songwriting and sound. From raw and dirty Rock n’ Roll, reaching in to more dark and folky landscapes, the music challenges you, but at the same time makes you feel at home.
German Rolling Stone magazine described Son of Fortune’s music as Voodoo Pop and this is a label he wears proudly.
“Island rockers, windswept and epic” – Gigwise
“The music takes shape in the tension between unconditional riff rock andenchanting songwriting” – Heilabrim
“Sounds that are somewhere between silence and storm, rainy dusk and magic midnight sun” – Nothing But Hope and Passion
Son of Fortune won four Faroese Music Awards in 2015 for the album “Ave”, which was a collaboration with poet Petur Pólson.

Voodoo Pop
1. Is It Essential
Words: Benjamin Petersen
Music: Benjamin Petersen, Jan Rúni Poulsen
I stand in front of a crowd
Feel one with the universe
All eyes on me
It’s roaring in the arena
I play the saddest note on my beat up old strat
Tears flood the beer-stained floors
I feel one with the universe
I raise my hands and in a heartbeat the mass looks like Jesus nailed to the cross
They listen, they hear me, they follow my lead
What the fuck?
Forgive me, as you teach me to forgive
Hope, I was searching for it
Found variations of it
But most of the time I was lost
Hope, is it essential?
I know that people live a whole life without it
Crusader, violator
Innocent emancipator
Impotent nation
Brainless infiltration
Vigorous apparition
Constipated vision
Distilled, soulless
Flirting with emptiness
Seeing is believing
Belief is deceiving
It’s a paper-made raft
That carries you through the storm
Connect to the other side
Be part of a bigger might
Don’t belong in it
Don’t get caught in it
2. Hurricane
Words: Benjamin Petersen
Music: Benjamin Petersen, Jan Rúni Poulsen
I thought about the girl
I met on the homebound train
I was free from draining thoughts
No duck tape around my soul
As she stormed towards me with a speed of 120 knots
She was beautiful and now my future seems hopeless
I was born in muddy waters but blossomed when I felt you’re breeze
Been wounded by the enjoyment of this world
But in your cyclone I feel no pain
My life was limited but in your stream I flow through everything
I’m a dragon and you’ll never understand me, Hurricane
Her rhythm was violent but I was floating
The train stopped at the outskirts of nowhere and the pulse died
My future now seems hopeless
My accident now seems meaningless
I am (breathe in) love (breathe out)
I run in circles
To become a cyclone
So I can be with you
Hurricane
3. Triumph
Words and music: Benjamin Petersen
Far away from any kind of truth
Far away from my roots
Lots of ways to move currencies
But no way to move your soul
So far away from the truth
We learn all the right moves
Still I feel nothing
We think we speak the truth
Still I stare into emptiness
Install another app
Lengthen the gap
So far away from the truth
Build walls, be afraid – HELL NO
Tear down you guards, love your neighbour – HELL YEAH
Start wars to make money – HELL NO
Plant a tree, breath freely – HELL YEAH
The essence is it makes no sense
So don’t be afraid
Get on your feet and walk the road to nowhere
The choice is mine but don’t make me choose
Come on now, I’m a traveling baby
Build walls, be afraid – HELL NO
Tear down you guards, love your neighbour – HELL YEAH
Hold grudges, don’t let go – HELL NO
Live free, be happy – HELL YEAH
Start wars to make money – HELL NO
Plant a tree, breath freely – HELL YEAH
Listen before you speak
And speak the truth only
LOVE LOVE
4. Spiritual Illiterate
Words and music: Benjamin Petersen, Dánjal á Neystabø
Born abrupt
Born to consign
A poisonous search to live life freely
Risen with the scripture
Fell without a trace
Born by thought and death by thinking
Illiterate
Spiritual illiterate
Born with a purpose
Without comprehension
Drowned in knowledge without any meaning
An airborne disease can erase your entire kin
But the big wheel keeps on spinning
Illiterate
Spiritual illiterate
5. Courage
Words and music: Benjamin Petersen
We caught each others eyes
In the reflection in the window
It was a long train ride
It was a long stare
She smiled at the window
I think it was intended for me
I got nervous, but I smiled back
Courage
The outside is blurry, traveling in high speed
An abandoned farm, leaf less trees
a dungaree working his car
Her stop could be at the next station
she would be lost forever
I have to start a conversation
Courage
Love of my life
Is this our first journey
Is this where it starts
Love of my life
Could you be her?
Can I be him? But I need courage
Fingers are trembling, I stare through the window
See a samurai in the clouds
with a big ethereal dragon
The engine stops, I’m in shock
This is her stop, I ran out of luck
Goodby happiness that might have been
Courage
Love of my life
Is this our first journey
Is this where it starts
Love of my life
Could you be her
Can I be him? But I need courage
Love of my life
Is this our first journey
Is this where it ends
6. Not My Time
Words and music: Benjamin Petersen
It was not my fault
I had to leave
Did what I thought was right
Who am I to know
They left me no choice
Blood over love
My skin it wasn’t right
For her kin to accept
This is not my time to shine, no
This is where I stay in line
I don’t know
I don’t know
Won’t make a mother
Leave her kids
Even if they are wrong
And segregate the world
I talked about it
Over a bottle
Got plenty of bad advice
And I used it all
This is not my time to shine, no
This is where I stay in line
I don’t know
I don’t know
I don’t know if people can change
Don’t know if they’ll ever listen
I don’t know how I’m suppose to go on now
Waiting for a second chance
This is not my time to shine, no
This is where I stay in line
I don’t know
I don’t know
I don’t know if I’ll be alright without you
I don’t know if there’s a second chance
I don’t know how I’m suppose to go on now
Waiting for a second chance
7. Bygones
Words: Benjamin Petersen
Music: Benjamin Petersen, Jan Rúni Poulsen
Last night I dreamt about an old friend
An old friend I’ve lost in time
But time is relative
A relative of mine
Unconscious, now I remember
No thinking, no good or bad
No thinking, no right or wrong
Just you
Bygones, bygones
Forever
Until
Bygones, bygones
I miss you
Crossfade between your soul and outer space
What’s the difference
Why can’t I be one with you, with the universe
And all of its powers
Bygones, bygones
Forever
Until
Bygones, bygones
Without you I’m lost
Bygones, bygones
I’m everything
