History repeats itself—again and again.
When I was young, dictatorships still cast their shadows over parts of Europe. Greece, Spain, and Portugal—each fell, each rose, each drowned their past in different ways. Mikis Theodorakis was born into that world in 1925. A composer, poet, and politician, he witnessed history unfold and shaped it with his music. He escaped being blamed for today’s troubles—he passed away in 2021, just four years shy of 100. Raised on a small Greek island, his soul was steeped in the sounds of folk traditions and church hymns. His path led him from the Athens Conservatory to Paris, but he became most famous for the iconic music of Zorba the Greek. Yet, his melodies weren’t just art—they were resistance. The Greek regime feared his songs, his words, his defiance. They imprisoned him, tortured him, and banned his music. Exiled on a remote island, his voice was meant to be silenced. But music finds a way. The lyrics of this song could have been written in that exile, on that island, in defiance of those who sought to quiet him. But his music still echoes. It still fights. It still matters.
