About Good Morning Reykjavík

This is Anna’s first time as co-composer with Arnold Ludvig. The music came to her in a sudden flash and Ludvig was able to understand the music that Anna heard in her head. The inspiration took place upon arriving in their flat in Reykjavík, Iceland, when they were welcomed and shaken by an earthquake. Ludvig was studying at Listaháskóli Íslands for his Masters and one of his courses was working with Ableton Live. This was also the first time that Ludvig incorporated the use of Ableton Live in his composing process for, Good Morning Reykjavík. Anna and Ludvig were lucky to have lived in an area in Reykjavík surrounded by a patch of nature where fairies are believed to be living in the great big stones. On one glorious morning, Anna stepped out on the balcony, got inspired and sang the second part of the song (a throwback to the 60’s) to the fairies. Then the question was how to blend the two very different styles of music – funk and retro together. That’s when Anna came up with the idea to use a radio tuning sound, which Ludvig found on Ableton live and other sources. The sound of tap, which Anna took classes in Reykjavík and the constant sound of Icelanders saying já, já (roughly ‘yow-yow’ in English phonetic spelling), which Faroese people call Jau’ari were all elements that inspired Anna in the creation of Good Morning Reykjavík, a song that surely will move your feet.

Reviews:

Pop and funk band MonkeyRat have released new track ‘Good Morning Reykjavik’: a brilliant pop track imbued with lashings of funk. It’s not hard to miss the clear George Clinton-esque good time funk on ‘Good Morning Reykjavik’ – MonkeyRat’’s new single is plucky and full of enough energy to warm up and wake a nation up, let alone Iceland capital. An infectious chorus coupled with some warm guitar sets the song up to keep you dancing from morning to night and MonkeyRat are sure to pull in even more fans with this track.”

Good Morning Reykjavík

Words: Anna Iachino, Arnold Ludvig
Music: Anna Iachino, Arnold Ludvig

Good morning Reykjavík
Start your morning with a kick
Wanna hear a funky lick?
Hit me!

Did u hear about the quake?
Was enough to make u shake
I feel Iceland moving
Felt the two and four, started groovin
groovin, movin how u doing?
I smell coffee, whatcha u brewin?

Já, já, já, já, já –
Wanna hear a funky lick – hit me!

What u doing still in bed
Why u such a sleepy head
I feel my body moving
Felt the 2 and 4 started groovin
groovin movin, how u doing?
I smell coffee, whatcha u brewin?

Já, já, já, já, já –
Wanna hear a funky lick – hit me!

Wow! Good morning Reykjavík
Good morning Reykjavík
Why-I said Good Morning
Good Morning Reykjavík
Aww, shuffle yo feet
Mmm, move to the beat
Feel the earth move
Right underneath

Don’t u know that I’m awake
and I’m here to make u shake
I feel Iceland moving
Felt the two and four, started groovin
groovin, movin how u doing?
I smell coffee, whatcha u brewin?

Já, já, já, já, já –
Wanna hear a funky lick – hit me!
