Harkaliðið

Ian McCalman is the namesake of one of Britain’s best known folk groups “The Mc-Calmans”. Because of their friendship with the members of “Harkaliðið” and the similarity of Faroese and Scottish music, “The McCalmans” did session guitar, concertina and whistle work on some of the tracks on this LP whilst on tour in Scandinavia. Ian McCalman writes:

“I come from a country that has struggled for centuries to maintain and preserve its national identity. Scotland and the Faroe Islands have much in common because of their affiliation to the bigger countries – Scotland to England, the Faroe Islands to Denmark.

Therefore there was no feeling of “the out- sider” when I and my two collegues were invited by Annika, Kári and the light and the dark Jógvan to sit in on their sessions for this LP, and although I’ve been involved in many British LP’s, I think that this has been the most enjoyable.

This record combines the group’s Faroese songs with an international standard of singing and arrangement. Their sympathy for the tradi- tional and contemporary music that they sing has a quality seldom heard on a record origi- nally intended for such a small listening audience.

All members of the group are Faroese and all are students in Copenhagen. Their performances on television and radio plus their stage performances have brought the Faroese songs and tradition to a great number of people. I hope that this record will convince an even larger number of people that the Faroese songs have a vitality and beauty which can be appreciated even without a knowledge of the language.
