About Eitt dýpi av dýrari tíð / A Chasm of Precious Time

The late Jens Pauli Heinesen, who is considered to be one of the most prominent writers in the Faroe Islands, was celebrated last year in connection with his 90th birthday on November 12th, 2022, with a great honor event / concert in the Nordic House in Tórshavn. The focus was on six of his poems that Elin Brimheim Heinesen, his daughter has set music to. Magnificent symphonic music has been arranged for the six compositions which were performed at the tribute concert by the Faroe Islands Symphony Orchestra, the choirs Tarira and Tórshavn’s Male Choir with Elin as vocal soloist. Studio recordings of the musical works are now finally being released on an album – both on CD and on vinyl, in addition to digital platforms on the web.

The album will be made available on digital streaming platforms and CD on it’s release day, followed by an LP later this year, available to pre-order now.

Eitt dýpi av dýrari tíð

1. Sorgin er vøkur við

Words: Jens Pauli Heinesen (1970)
Music: Elin Brimheim Heinesen (2020)

Dandar so blíðan bára
á kvøldi um nakið sker
Ongantíð hevur hon nomið
kærleikans aldugerð
Suðar so blíðan lotið
kátt er lagið, men kalt
Ongantíð hevur tað nomið
nomið við tað, ið er alt

Hugsjúk tí blíða báran
fevnir um nakið sker
Takið meg, køldu steinar
yndið meg einaferð
Trásjúkt tí mjúka lotið
smýgur um nakið basalt
Takið meg, køldu klettar
lívga meg tú, ið er alt

Skuldi tað hent seg, at lagnan
ikki vil unna mær frið
:||: Spæl so, fiól og urga,
tí sorgin er vøkur við :||:

2. Flóttin

Words: Jens Pauli Heinesen (1971)
Music: Elin Brimheim Heinesen (2020)

Lættur í lund
spældi um stund
sól gylti skógir og tindar
Sangur og vín
unnustan mín
Ymiskir blæsa teir vindar
Deyðin fór herjandi buldur og gný
Smildraði heimin, sum vit livdu í
Á, tú týnandi makt millum manna
hvar finni eg lívd fyri tær
Skal eg eldast og ongantíð sanna
at her var rúm fyri mær
Burt í fjarløgdum londum frá vinum og heimi
eg siti í skugga hjá slóknandi eimi
Skal eg eldast og ongantíð sanna
at her var rúm fyri mær

Silvur og gull
húsini full
men hvar er mín lukka, mín gleði
Í einbýli her
tó at sorgin hon fylgir mær við
Og tí sigli eg bát mín mót ókendum londum
og haldi um stýrið við skelvandi hondum
:||: Eg má rýma frá húsi og landi
tó at sorgin hon fylgir mær við :||:

3. Heystnáttin

Words: Jens Pauli Heinesen (1951)
Music: Elin Brimheim Heinesen (2012)

Legst á brekkur og varðar
tá dagurin varliga skýmir
eitt lag av háðandi myrkri
ið kemur, tá ljósið rýmir
Deyðin er altíð kvirrur
Tøgn gløðir honum úr eygum
Náttin er hansara látur
ið vekir hamin hjá deyðum

Livnar í vátum lyngi
á sýnum og gomlum gøtum
Bøllutir steinar skakkir
vakna á víðum fløtum
Vindar, ið fara og koma
tættar og tungar nætur
suða í deyðum grasi
sum barn ið móðurleyst grætur

Livnar í svørtum botnum
í homrum og djúpum gjáum
Vitleyst berst móti lofti
látur úr tómum kráum
Føðast og farast í hvirlum
náttarljóð undir fjøllum
Vaksa í mannahugum
til súsan av ósæddum trøllum

Deyðin, hin blánandi ævi
ótaldar glanandi gátur
Á háðandi heystarnáttum
hoyrir tú hansara látur
Føtur, ið bangnir ferðast
á nátt yvir følnaðar urtir
:||: Rodnar ein kjálki í eystri
ið blæsur náttina burtur :||:

4. Eg gangi við einum djúpi

Words: Jens Pauli Heinesen (1970)
Music: Elin Brimheim Heinesen (2020)

Eg gangi við einum djúpi
av ræðslu, hati og skuld
Tað djúpið er fostrað av sárum
ið liva og bløða í duld
Eg pínist av hesum djúpi
har alt er hatur og neyð
:||: hvar vanlukkur síggjast at trívast
og mannabørn liggja deyð :||:

Men fram av teim ræðsludjúpum
ið loga í mannaond
har veksur hin ævigi botnur
ið brennur á deyðans strond
Skal meðan tað skýmir í verøld
og dagarnir renna framvið
:||: eg við hesum djúpi ganga
og einaferð farast harí? :||:

Nei, leið meg, tú grundari hjartans
til plássið, nú tveytúsund ár
har óndir tokkar forfarast
og hatur fær banasár
Ja, leið meg tú grundari hjartans
til plássið, nú tveytúsund ár
:||: har óndir tokkar forfarast
og hatur fær banasár :||:

5. Sóleyan lýsir um fløtur

Words: Jens Pauli Heinesen (1964)
Music: Elin Brimheim Heinesen (2012)

Kvøldar á sundi, nátt er í nánd
Sólin at havgeiri dregur
Nátarnir flúgva at sovandi strond
Minnini hava so kalda hond
ið kínir tær, tá ið tú svevur

Streymar á sundi, streymar í mær
broddur av drepandi iva
sum melur í klingur, bønar um svar
Men dunið út úr gjáunum lær
at okkum, ið elska, ið liva

Tey spæla bert við okkum, lívsins kor
tær sælu, lygnandi løtur
nú lombini leika í grønari skor
og heimar smildrast við eittans orð
og sóleyan lýsir um fløtur
Sóleyan lýsir um fløtur

6. Eitt dýpi av dýrari tíð

Words: Jens Pauli Heinesen (1953)
Music: Elin Brimheim Heinesen (1987)

So verður sagt av monnum
at lívið er markleys neyð
eitt dýpi av gráum døgum
og børn, ið biðja um breyð
Kanska er lívið sorgarlag
Kanska er lívið gott
Og kanska eg ein skínandi dag
beri kenslu av myrkari nátt

Í nátt er luftin so rein og klár
bládjúp og ísandi køld
Foldin hvílir í hvítari tøgn
og norðlýsið reisir sær tjøld
Og vit mítt er fult av tonkum
á ferð út á víðan veg
at finna á miðleysu náttargongd
tann vísdóm, ið uggar meg

Men ongan vísdóm eg finni
ið sigur tey sonnu orð
Sum bløðandi fuglar falla tey
aftur at hvítari for
Tó eg veit at dýrgripir finnast
og fjalast við gráan eim
tá gentur og dreingir spenna
sum folar í dans og gleim

Tá barmur mín spentur av undran
av eydnu, av tungari trá
av iva og sorgarløgum
Eisini, eisini tá
:||: veit eg at lívið er gáva
eitt dýpi av dýrari tíð
sum øll skulu valla ígjøgnum
rekast og villast inní :||:

7. Sorrow is Beautiful Too

Words: Jens Pauli Heinesen (1970)
Music & Translation: Elin Brimheim Heinesen (2020)

At dusk a wave gently seesaws
on a naked skerry in dance
Not once has it ever fondled
the waltzing waves of romance
A flurry of air whispers gently
a cheerful refrain, but cold
Not once has it ever cuddled
cuddled that trait which is all

That’s why this gentle sea wave
embraces the skerry in pain
Take me, cold stones, take me
love me, please, just one time
That’s why the breeze so fondly
caresses the naked basalt
Take me, cold rocks, take me
and comfort me, you, who are all

If destiny happens to hinder
a peaceful mind, through and through
:||: Then play for me, violin, and organ
‘cause sorrow is beautiful too :||:

8. The Refugee

Words: Jens Pauli Heinesen (1971)
Music & Translation: Elin Brimheim Heinesen (2020)

Careless a while
all fun and smiles
at hillsides in sunny reflections
Singing and wine
darling of mine
Winds blow in different directions
The reaper went ravaging, rumbled, and rolled
shattered the planet on which we live all
Oh, calamitous force among humans
where will I find shelter from you?
Should I grow old and never be certain
that I have a place to roam to
In a foreign land far from my friends and my home
I’m sitting in shade by the embers alone
Should I grow old and never be certain
that I have a place to roam to?

Silver and gold
the house chockfull
But where is my luck and my pleasure
In solitude here
freezing in fear
Day follows day without leisure
Rays of poison in every crack
An eye is out lurking, I’m under attack
They scare me away with their sorcery
They give me no space to breathe
I must flee from my home and my country
though grieving accompanies me
And that’s why I’m sailing to faraway lands
and holding my wheel with trembling hands
:||: I must flee from my home and my country
though grieving accompanies me :||:

9. Autumn Night

Words: Jens Pauli Heinesen (1951)
Music & Translation: Elin Brimheim Heinesen (2020)

Night falls on cairns on the hillsides
now the day has warily darkened
enshrouds them in tarnishing twilight
that follows when light grows absent
The reaper is always quiet
His eyes shining scarlet with stillness
The night is his rowdy riot
that wakes up the ghosts of the lifeless

Glistening heather awakens
on old paths on mountain-edges
Rounded boulders lie frightened
rise up on open stretches
Winds come and go on the moorland
Darkness is dense and defying
whispers in withered grassland
like motherless children crying

Pitch-dark gorges awaken
in clefts and abysmal trenches
Madly carried up skywards
laughter from shrivelled sedges
Born and then lost in whirlwinds
nightly noise under mountains
soaring in human senses
to gabble from ghostly giants

Death, that infinite bottom
countless mysteries glaring
On noxious nights in the autumn
his laughter is heard, unsparing
Fearful feet are out rushing
in darkness on withered flowers
:||: A cheek in the east is blushing
and blows off the nightly powers :||:

10. The Chasm Deep Within

Words: Jens Pauli Heinesen (1970)
Music & Translation: Elin Brimheim Heinesen (2020)

I walk with a chasm deep within me
of horror, of hate and of guilt
This horror is fostered by lesions
that bleed and reside concealed
I’m plagued by this chasm deep within me
where all is just hatred and dread
:||: where tragedy seems to flourish
and human beings lie dead :||:

But out from these depths of horror
that flame within human minds
this endless hollow is swelling
that burns at the shores of demise
Should I while the world slowly darkens
and days fly hastily by
:||: walk with this chasm deep within me
and perish in it one day? :||:

No, please, my pondering heart, lead me
to that place, now two thousand years
where evil desires dwindle
and hate gets its terminal tear
Yes, please, my pondering heart, lead me
to that place, now two thousand years
:||: where evil desires dwindle
and hate gets its terminal tear :||:

11. Buttercups Light Up the Meadows

Words: Jens Pauli Heinesen (1964)
Music: Elin Brimheim Heinesen (2012)
Translation: Elin Brimheim Heinesen (2020)

Dusk on the sound, day lingers no more
The sun falls behind the horizon
The fulmars fly full to the slumbering shore
The memories stroke you, cold and sore
at night from where dreams are arising

Streams on the sound, fast flowing in me
a pinching of gruelling misgivings
swirls round and round, begging, yearning for heed
But rumble from gorges revels in glee
at us and our loving and living

They play around with us, all palettes of life
these blissful and marvellous moments
while lambs are at play on grassy hillsides
and worlds are smashed by a single might
while buttercups light up the meadows
Buttercups light up the meadows

12. A Chasm of Precious Time

Words: Jens Pauli Heinesen (1953)
Music: Elin Brimheim Heinesen (1987)
Translation: Elin Brimheim Heinesen (2020)

So many people are saying
that life is eternal dread
a chasm of mournful moments
and children begging for bread
Life may well be a mournful song
Life may well be alright
And maybe I on a sunshiny day
remember a shadowy night

Tonight, the air is so pure and clear
deep blue and icy cold
Earth lies beneath a silent, white layer
and northern lights let their veils fold
My mind is so full of wondering
and travelling far in the blind
tonight, without heading or purpose trying
to heartening wisdom find

But there is no wisdom to gather
that brings out those trusty words
Like bleeding birds, they shatter right down
back on the snow-covered earth
But I know that treasures are buried
deep down in the ember’s grey
when girls and boys, unwearied
are dancing like foals in play

That is when my heart bursts with wonder
of yearn and deep melancholy
of doubt and of bliss and shudder
Even those moments I see
:||: see that this life is an offering
a chasm of precious time, you
were given to go through exploring
to drift and to stray deep into :||:
