Maikin was born and raised in the Faroe Islands. At the age of 20 she moved away and has lived her entire adult life abroad in many places of the world. She now resides in Denmark with her family.
She has been singing all her life, but didn’t start writing her own music till her husband passed away in 2020. Many families find that mourning a loved one can sometimes hit so deeply that it can feel worse than death itself. For some, their life comes to a standstill and it can become almost impossible see how life can go on.
That is why Maikin says that we need to be open about the grief that we carry together with those who are still with us. On This Christmas is You Maikin hopes to be able to spread the message, that together with the sadness of having lost a loved one, we must remember to enjoy and appreciate life and those we have left by our side, even more.
This Christmas is You was written after a long day at the office, just before the season in 2020. Loneliness came over Maikin. Loneliness of not sharing the joy of Christmas with her husband. The only person who really knew what their Christmas used to be like in their home together with their kids, was him.
Maikin decided that this Christmas should be as good as possible for her grieving family. She wanted to make the most of it, and what now was. She stayed a little longer in the office that day. After everyone else had left, she expressed herself on a piece of paper, as she often does, and this is when she wrote This Christmas is You.
