About Aaret

This little poem, written by William Heinesen 100 years ago, has given Stanley Samuelsen an opportunity to present a musical interpretation of yet another great Faroese poet.

‘Aaret’ meaning ‘The Year’ is part of ‘Arctic Elegies’ (1921), young Heinesen’s first collection of poems, and many years later, in 1984, he wrote that through ‘the extravagant title, the mood of my dark islands in the Northern sea lent a much needed reflection to the glorious morning light of Greek Antiquity.’

Stanley has composed the music on his acoustic guitar, adding to it the violin of Marco Santini and the piano of Paolo Principi, both from Italy. The song has by this gained a glimmer of Antiquity’s morning light.
