Description

Skull-Sized Kingdom

Skull-Sized Kingdom is the second studio album from Lyon Hansen. The title refers to a David Foster Wallace quote that states something in the line of: We are all emperors of our own Skull-Sized Kingdoms. Here, the author probably refers to the inner workings and complexities of our own minds and how we are in a sense rulers of our very own kingdoms, our heads.

The album consists of eleven songs. Seven of them are sung in English and the remaining four are in Faroese. And just like the inner thoughts and dreams of the mind and soul, the songs vary in both in lyrical content and musical styles, exploring different avenues.

The album also features some of the greatest musicians the islands have to offer: bassist Karl Andrias Stórá, keyboardist Kristian Pauli Ellefsen and drummer Hjørtur Háberg. Singer/songwriter Guðrið Hansdóttir also appears on two of the last tracks.

Skull-Sized Kingdom

1. Skull-Sized Kingdom

Words & music: Lyon Hansen

Ever since I was born
I’ve been pulling at this thorn
I’ve been paying the rent for my room
In my skull-sized kingdom

I’ve been a cheater and a drunk
Been a scoundrel and a skunk
And I’ve never done the work
A decent man could be proud of

I hit my brother He hit back
I lost my money Down at the tracks
So I vanished back into the slums in
my skull-sized kingdom

Easy comes and easy goes
Those are the rules I suppose
But my G-d how I’ve tried
To change them

And to set the record straight
To stop tearing down what we create
To live a day just one day
not feeling resentful

Towards the darkness in the past
Towards the love(light) that never lasts
Towards the civil war that rages on
in my skull-sized kingdom

2. Life in the city

Words & music: Lyon Hansen

I’ve been dreaming about a life in the city
Where the girls they dance they are so pretty
The way they dress is pure sofistication
In their eyes are subtle invitations

I’ve got my hat, I’ve got my coat I’ve got my suitcase
Now all I need is a key and my own place
I’ve got the shades I’ve got the eyes behind the glasses
I’ve got the moves to blend with the masses

I’ve got my desk I’ve got my pencil and eraser
Now all I need is to get paid and go chase her
She could be you she could be someone much sweeter
I’m afraid I’ll die before I meet her

She’s a dancer she’s a singer in a blues band
She can hold a note while doing handstands
I think I know her from the faces in the subway
Tired looks that go all the way to Monday

Her hair is black like the feathers of the raven
Her figure is everything that I am craving
Her eyes are blue and pale like the moonlight
Her perfume lingers in the air from last night

Sunken ships and sunken sailors
Drunken fools and drunken whalers
Hear how the holler well I’ll better go and call her
Before the steal her and bring her to their trawler
I’ve been dreaming about a life in the city…

3. Gone Yonder

Words & music: Lyon Hansen

If you’re coming
Coming to find me
There’s no use
I left no traces behind me

Over the hills
My feet are marching
Under a sun that sees
No wrong

I am gone
Gone yonder
Some say down under
Either way I’m free

If you are trying
to convince me
That I should stay
For another day

Well it’s too late
For I’ve made up my mind
Let the dead bury the dead
And the blind lead the blind

I am gone
Gone yonder
Some say down under
Either way I’m free
I am gone
Gone yonder
Some say down under
Either way I’m free

If you’re coming with
Ribbons and flowers
And all those things
You think that lovers need

Well there’s no use
I ain’t buying
I do not possess
That old lovers greed

I am gone
Gone yonder
Some say down under
Either way I’m free
I am gone
Gone yonder
Some say down under
Either way I’m free
I am gone
Gone yonder
Some say down under
Either way I’m free

4. The Archeologist

Words & music: Lyon Hansen

I must have danced with you
The whole night through
We used to sneak around
All over town

It must have been the early morning
We wearing our shades
You told me I was kinda boring
That I’m just another mistake

I still hang around
In the same old bars
I still get around
In the same old car

I heard you got a degree
In archaeology
And when you dig up the bones
You get to take them home
And now you’re looking at me
Like I’m some kind of extra curricular activity

It must have been the early morning
We wearing our shades
You told me I was kinda boring
That I’m just another mistake

I must have danced with you
The whole night through
We used to sneak around
All over town

5. Someday

Words & music: Lyon Hansen

Someday maybe later
I’ll meet you up around the bend
And we’ll talk about the ocean
And of things that never end

Where I’m going I don’t know yet
But I need to stop think for a while
Look down these streets In this old town
Maybe there are things I missed from the start

No one is making you babe
Offers you cannot refuse
No one is forcing you babe
To do things you don’t want to do

Don’t read to much into it
You could have known by now
Your body knows the reason
And your heart knows how

Don’t study the light to closely now
It will only leave you in the dark
How can you look into the distance
Without ever knowing who you are

Don’t make it a habit
Dwell in the past before you sleep
Somewhere in the distance there’s a future
You are allowed to see and keep

Someday maybe later
I’ll meet you up around the bend
And we’ll talk about the ocean
And of things that never end

6. Stones in Your Pockets

Words & music: Lyon Hansen

While you’ve been hiding
I’ve been seeking
I think that’s why
We’ve never met

You’re in the journals
I’ve been keeping
But I need to stop
Learn how to forget

While you’ve been sleeping
I’ve been dreaming
About a love
In a chamber in the sea

No matter how deep
Or shallow waters
I think she’ll never
Swim up to me

She said
Put some stones in your pockets
And come to me
Leave all your worries
And fall into eternity

From the lighthouse
I hear her calling
Out my name
And out my past

Through the darkness
I am falling
A life like this
Could never last

She said:
Put some stones in your pockets
And come to me
Leave all your worries
And fall into eternity

7. Pass It On (Down the River)

Words & music: Lyon Hansen

I had so many dreams before I met you
So many things I needed to do
Standing in your light has left them useless
All my little dreams I’d rather not have
I see you standing in the doorway
I see you slowly slipping away

Lets take this love down to the river
Put it in a basket woven with hope
And pass it on down the river
Pass it on down the river

I sang so many songs before I heard you
So many tunes I knew by heart
Bathing in your voice has left them silent
All my little songs I’d rather not sing
I see a hill where you are standing
I see you waking up with me
I see you are mad from across the table
Sometimes I’m Cain
Sometimes you’re Abel

Lets take this love down to the river
Put it in a basket woven with hope
And pass it on down the river
Pass it on down the river

8.  Ætt eftur ætt

Words & music: Lyon Hansen

Eg havi sæð tínar myndir
Tær tú tók í Meksiko
Tær tú tók í Monako
Og tær á sponsku trappu

Eg havi hoyrt tínar sangir
Teir tú sang í kirkjuni
Teir tú sang í ballinum
Og teir á songarstokki

Ætt eftir ætt
Søkkur undir mold
Tú ert himmalin á fold

Eg minnist síðsta dansin
Eg minnist síðsta mussin
Eg minnist síðsta smílið
Áðrenn heimurin tók teg

Eg havi sæð tínar myndir
Tær tú tók í Meksiko
Tær tú tók í Monako
Og tær á songarstokki

Ætt eftir ætt
Søkkur undir mold
Tú ert himmalin á fold
Ætt eftir ætt
Søkkur undir mold
Tú ert himmalin á fold
Ætt eftir ætt
Søkkur undir mold
Tú ert himmalin á fold

9. Kom heim við mær

Words & music: Lyon Hansen

Eg síggi títt andlit í mánalýsinum
Tú ert enn tann sama sum tú vart tá tú vart ung
Við skrøddum kovboybuksum og einum walkman sum syngur the blues
Vit plagdu at fylgjast heim til hús

Kom heim við mær
Kom heim við mær
Kom heim við mær

Tað einasta okkum tørvar
Er ein pakki av prins light
Mín hálva fløska
Og tín fulla fløska Sprite

Hoyr hundarnir goyggja
Í illum og í neyð
Meðan tjøldrini klippa
Náttina í tvey

Kom heim við mær
Kom heim við mær
Kom heim við mær
Kom heim við mær

Og um vit missa mótið
Og fella í fátt
So lýsir mánin
Fyri okkum í nátt

Vit fylgja bara hegninum
So langt sum eygað ber
Yvir um ánna
Og út úr hesi verð

Kom heim við mær
Kom heim við mær
Kom heim við mær
Ja kom heim við mær

Eg síggi títt andlit í mánalýsinum
Tú ert enn tann sama sum tú vart tá tú vart ung
Við skrøddum kovboybuksum og einum walkman sum syngur the blues
Vit plagdu at fylgjast heim til hús

10. Leið 400

Words & music: Lyon Hansen

leið 400 fer
um fimm minuttir
hevur tú nakað uppá hjarta
áðrenn eg hvørvi
upp í bussin
og norður í myrkrið
gloymi alt um mussin
og alt eg yrkti
í tíni íbúð
í tíni song
sum var alt ov trong

bókbindaragøta
tað var bert ein løta
nú er tað bert ein tanki
um eina løtu ert tú einki meira enn eitt minni
um eina løtu ert tú einki meira enn eitt minni
um eina løtu ert tú einki meira enn eitt minni

leið 400 fer
um fimm minuttir
sum ein gomul rakett
skjýtur hon seg norður
í gjøgnum sundalagið
og yvir um brúnna
og finnir eina gøtu
har tróndur fann trúnna

eg stari gjøgnum vindeyga
síggi áirnar fara framvið
síggi bilarnar fara forbíð
síggi prestarnar lið um lið

leið 400 fer
um fimm minuttir
hevur tú nakað upp á hjarta
áðrenn eg hvørvi
áðrenn eg hvørvi
áðrenn eg hvørvi
áðrenn eg hvørvi

11. Summar nætur

Words & music: Lyon Hansen

Genta mín er vøkur
Hon stendur har yviri
Heldur seg líkjast
Venus de Milo

Áðrenn hon sær meg
Lat meg fáa hendan dansin
Man veit aldrin nær kvøldið
Kastar síðsta kjansin

Eg longdist aftur til tín
Nú sólin fór um sýn
Summar nætur koma ongantíð aftur
Summar nætur koma ongantíð aftur
Summar nætur koma ongantíð aftur

Alt sum eg vrakaði og legði eftir
Brotin lyftir og royktar sigarettir
Tað er nú fari tað er nú fyrigivið
Slett yvir havið
Ella kanska niðurgrivið

Eg longdist aftur til tín
Nú sólin fór um sýn
Summar nætur koma ongantíð aftur
Summar nætur koma ongantíð aftur
Summar nætur koma ongantíð aftur

Alt sum tú droymdi um
Og alt sum tú vildi
Tað hevur tú við tær
Inn í paradísgildið
Hvussu tú so vendur
Og hvussu tú so snarar
So finnur áin havið
Um tað fløðir ella fjarar

Men tað er bert ein vegur inn
Heim til Faðirin

Summar nætur koma ongantíð aftur
Summar nætur koma ongantíð aftur
Summar nætur koma ongantíð aftur

Genta mín er vøkur
Hon stendur har yviri
Heldur seg líkjast
Venus de Milo

Áðrenn hon sær meg
Lat meg fáa hendan dansin
Man veit aldrin nær kvøldið
Kastar síðsta kjansin
