Tórshavnar Big Band

Tórshavnar Big Band was started in 1972 as the first ever Big Band in the Faroe Islands.

Saxophonist and music teacher, Brandur Øssursson founded the orchestra and he remained an active member of the band and the faroese music scene for many years. He was also one of the founders of the Jazz-, Folk-, and Blues Festival (1984) which now lives on as Vetrarjazz.

Tórshavnar Big Band was for many years a house-orchestra in the V4 radio program.

The Big Band has been active for many years, performing at the Jazz-, Folk-, and Blues festival, as well as Vetrarjazz and other events. Their program consists of standards as well as original compositions.

Some of the soloists and conductors who have shared the stage with Tórshavnar Big Band include: Dirch Passer, Tor Ytredal, Jens Klüver, Eero Koivistoinen, Jesper Thilo, Butch Lacy, Bjarne Tanning, John Højbye, Dania O. Tausen, Jasmin Mote, James Olsen, Kristina Bærendsen, and many more.

The band has since 2016 been active with 2-3 regular yearly concerts.
