Kalas

Kalas is a folk music ensemble from the Faroe Islands, established in 2017 by four childhood friends:

Døgg Jógvansdóttir úr Dímun (violin)
Kristianna Skarpheðinsdóttir Joensen (accordion)
Bjørt Holm (cello)
Sigrið F. Hansen (doublebass)

Their musical journey began in 2010 as participants of the music program “Colourstrings” at the elementary school “Kommunuskúlin” in Tórshavn, where they were introduced to the world of classical music.

Individually, each member has excelled in classical music, winning awards in competitions such as Stella Polaris Classical Music Competition and Cresendo Chamber Music Competition, both in the Faroe Islands, as well as Berlingske Classical Music Competition in Denmark. They have received formal music education from the music school of Tórshavn, completed the three-year “Musikkskúlamiðnám” program, and have played with the Faroese Symphony Orchestra for many years.

Despite their deep involvement in classical music, they developed a soft spot for folk music while attending the Nordic Folk Camp Festival in Finland in 2017. There, they explored various forms of Nordic folk music and performed together for the first time. This experience led them to establish their own group, Kalas, upon their return home. Since then, Kalas has performed numerous concerts in various locations in the Faroe Islands, including Stóra Dímun, Suðuroy, Vágar and Tórshavn. They have also participated in several folk camps, both in the Faroe Islands and abroad. As they prepare to embark on separate paths as adults, they have decided to release “Minnisgripir”(“Keepsakes”) as a tribute to the cherished memories created through their shared musical journey.
