Description
Harri, mínar troyttu hendur
From childhood, the members of Gadders have heard about the Toftakórið and Hans Jacob Højgaard — figures who, well into the 1950s, played a defining role in Faroese choral and church music. Most of the members of Gadders come from a church background in Toftir, and they have therefore decided to sing something by their fellow townsman.
“Teacher Hans Jacob” — as he also was known — was from Toftir and founded Toftakórið in the early 1930s.
Hans Jacob and his colleague Steingrím Niclasen made an outstanding contribution to hymnody. In the hymnal, there are four hymns with lyrics by Steingrím and melodies composed by Hans Jacob. The most well-known of these is: Harri, mínar troyttu hendur (Lord, My Weary Hands).
Although Harri, mínar troyttu hendur is often sung at funerals, it is primarily a prayer to God for grace and forgiveness and is therefore always appropriate. With this beautiful hymn, Gadders wish to share the message of this grace and forgiveness with others.
