Kór Glyvra kirkju

Kór Glyvra kirkju

The choir of Glyvrar church was founded in 1969 with Símun Nónklett as conductor. The purpose of the choir was to promote, develop and increase hymn singing within the church.

The hymn singing survived and the choral singing continued. The choir released an LP in 1972 with the title “Kirkjutónar” (Church Notes). The following year the choir released another LP, called “Í adventini” (In Advent).

In addition, the choir set out to rehearse parts of Handel’s “Messias” in collaboration with musicians from the Torshavn Music School. This was a storm and a breakthrough in the history of Faroese choir music. The work was performed in 1976. The following year they sang Haydn’s “Mass in Time of Trouble”.

Since 2004, the choir has followed the Anglican singing tradition and has broken new ground in Iceland by singing the Psalms of David in the old and reciting style of Jákup Dahl’s translation. The choir has sometimes invited people to afternoon singing according to the English model in Glyvrar church and other churches. In 2008, the choir was in England with the aim of learning and getting inspiration.

The choir of Glyvrar church usually has two concerts a year – one spring concert and one Christmas concert. The choir has often been invited to various events in Runavík municipality. In connection with the choir’s fiftieth anniversary in 2019, a tribute concert was held in the church.

Meinhard Bjartalíð, priest and organist, has led the choir since 2002.
